PopCanon!   PopCanon Concert Videos
comments?

PopCanon: noisepop avantpunk idiotrock ... sort of a cross between XTC, TMBG and X, but with more vowels ... a 6-piece nonska band with horns, attitude and a Master's degree in English ... the music of tomorrow, one day early ... now in convenient digital video form!

At long last! Concert videos from the upcoming rockumentary about PopCanon directed by Alex Fernandez.

Footage shot by Alex Fernandez, Jeffrey Lotz and Manny Martinez and edited by Ned Davis.

ArtHole
(featuring Balzac)

from the Last Show Ever - 21 April 2001

In this delightful piece, professional freak Balzac drove down from Montgomery AL to be with PopCanon the night of the fateful Last Show Ever and perform his 'act' which he first perfected with our sister band Pain: i.e., jamming a screwdriver in his nose and then lighting his nutsack on fire. Now, I don't like to use the word 'hero' very often, but you, sir, are perhaps the greatest hero who has ever lived...

I Stole A Mantra
(featuring Squeaky)

from the Last Show Ever - 21 April 2001

A video chock full of combined PopCanon / Squeaky goodness! A fine version of this old Semantics classic, plus at the end Ned smashes up a guitar and advertently pokes a hole in the ceiling of the Common Grounds with the guitar neck.

Impossible
from the Last Show Ever - 21 April 2001

Straight-up rocking performance of the jumpy d'art number. A good rendition of a good song, though marred by several incorrect numerical references to Alice's Adventures In Wonderland...

Features one new (and typically self-referential) lyric to commemorate the occasion -- find it!

Rene Rene
from the Last Show Ever - 21 April 2001

Perhaps the most beautiful of all PopCanon songs (and certainly one of the best-arranged), this version is augmented by the presence of Gainesville legend Frog on trombone, early in the night before he went on to imperil the very instrument he was playing...

Ballyhoo
from the Last Show Ever - 21 April 2001
Edited by Alex Fernandez

A fine and representative PC number, commissioned by the University of Montevallo (AL) Philosophy Club for their annual debate Faith v. Reason (guess which side we're on!) ... a classic singalong, a tom-tom drum solo and a gospel raveup ending -- how can you beat that?

ONE SIZE FITS ALL

The Thin Imp
from the Last Show Ever - 21 April 2001

A disturbing bit of video comedy, from the pause between performing 'Things About Which' and 'Impossible' (hence The Thin Imp). Dave has removed his pants and is displaying his 'Thin Imp' ... which--though it really probably shouldn't--surprises most everyone.
