Filmmaker's Diary:
|
I've not been back to work on this movie one week, and already Ned is driving me nuts. In addition to his usual siege of phone calls and e-mail, I tell him that I decided to place the trophy giveaway scene early in the film, and he's got a lightning-fast reason why that's not a good idea. Always fun to have something shot down before it's even been born. The work he has done on the documentary's new web presence on the PopCanon site (with help from Michael and Dave) is fucking fantastic, but it's accompanied by a never-ending demand for stills and clips. [Neditor: Why, here are some to illustrate this very point, you crybaby!]
In fact, i've spent most of this past week working on that. Still, that website does look amazing. It adds the project such an air of legitimacy and excitement. It fills me with pride, and encourages me to soldier on. But goddamn it, Ned's on me like a cheap suit. He's just got so much energy he doesn't know what to do with it. Check that, he knows exactly what he should do with it:
Ah fuck it, this project would be nowhere if he WASN'T like that. It's my cross to bear.
I've decided to seek out some help with the labor of cutting the movie. I invited over my friend Mike Lopez, a very talented filmmaker and actor, to check out some of the footage i've put together and see if it's something he would like to work on. He agreed to take a scene to assemble. But that was on the eighth, and i have yet to hear from him. [See! That's what I'M talking about! Mr. Pot, Mr. Kettle is calling...] He wants to help and expressed genuine interest in my "suck-u-mentary" as Don Undeen dubbed it, but he has a couple of projects of his own he's currently focusing on, as well as a full time job as an editor on other people's movies, so we'll see how far his level of involvement goes. It would kick much ass if he joined me because he's a much better editor than I am and works very fast, but I'm cutting this thing with or without him. I may also enlist help from students at the many film schools here in Tinsel Town. Perhaps one or more of them would be as interested as Kristin and Rachel were to take part in a project like this.
The upswing of positive work and progress on the movie is being mirrored by an upswing in my acting career. I performed in a showcase of latino talent for the CBS network yesterday, which has already led to a couple of very important opportunities. If things go as I hope, my life as I currently know it may change. Now that i've jinxed that...
