Part the Eleventh: Pains of Youth

11 OCTOBER 2002

I simply can't believe that the fans of this website miss these diary entries enough to actually write and complain about it. How can both of you be that bored? All I can say is: I'm sorry. I have spent the last couple of months immersed in 1923 Vienna, the setting of PAINS OF YOUTH, the play I'm directing which opens November 2nd. Why, here's the flyer!

I'm directing it (under a pseudonym), acting in it, designing it, financing it, and a bunch of other stuff. Which is a lot for a lazy guy like me. Luckily, I've got a great deal of help from a terrific group of actors and a kick-ass stage manager/right-hand man, the intrepid Travis White. You'll be seeing a lot of him in the future.

But the deal is this: I've been waiting for a chance to produce this play for several years; this year, when all the planets had finally lined up (cast, crew, climate, everything), I jumped. Unfortunately, it meant that the great and powerful PopCanon suckumentary would have to be put aside for the duration. But don't worry, it's merely temporary.

Any blue, this, my day job as America's most beloved bookstore manager, as well as my blossoming hack-ting career, have turned my life at the moment into a seemingly endless stream of twelve hour days. So I haven't been able to muster up any wordage. It's a shame, too, 'cause I've got a lot to tell youse people. Some highlights include a shouting match with Marty Engels, all hell breaking loose at an Indian casino in Temecula, California, and Ned titty-fucking Winona Ryder. (Neditor: that's the best part!)

All these stories and more I shall tell. Just not right now. But I'll be back. To let you know. I can really shake 'em down.

In the meantime, if you care to, you can watch my appearance on ROBBERY HOMICIDE DIVISION, Friday, October 11th (shit, that's today!) at 10pm on CBS. I play the plucky young serial rapist/killer with a heart of gold, trying to make my way in a world gone mad. I co-star with Tom Sizemore and a 70-year-old woman who plays my wife. The show is produced by Michael Mann, director of HEAT and THE INSIDER. The moment I learned that he had personally cast me was one of the proudest I've had as an actor. He took one look at my tape and said "now that guy looks like he's raped a lot of women!"

Funny story about Michael Mann ... [Ah, but not yet. Later, perhaps.]
