This is the PopCanon Rant & Rave v2 #1 -- the New Year.
This is the PopCanon Rant & Rave v.2 #1 for 6 January 1999--The MEGAJUMBO New Year's edition.
First things first--the business of ROCKING!
UPCOMING SHOWS
FRIDAY & SATURDAY, 8 & 9 JANUARY
JAMES JOYCE'S IRISH PUB in Ybor City, Tampa FL
This weekend we're playing two nights in a quietly boisterous
Irish pub named for one of our heroes. Like everything in Ybor City,
it's on 7th Avenue. This show will be similar to our last Gainesville
SideBar show, in that our secret lover Steve Bottom--
master of the 'brickem' (or, regionally, the 'blapem')--will be joining
us both nights on the drums. Sure it's two hours away, but as Pere
Ubu's David Thomas said, 'Rock music is mostly about moving big black boxes
from one side of town to the other in the back of your car.' And isn't
that what a road trip would be like?
[Lots more UPCOMING SHOWS at the bottom of this R&R. But now,
a more traditional greeting:]
HEY! It's a new year and stuff--how exciting. 1998 was
pretty OK for us, what with the rocking and all...I trust everything was
good for all of you, and like us, you're now ready to rock into the next
millenium--that is, until the Y2K bug wipes out the PopCanon website.
Rest assured, when that happens I'll be dropping by each and every one
of your homes each month and reading the contents of the new Rant &
Rave. I'll need to stay over, though, so remember I'm partial to
baby carrots in butter...
Speaking of our website, over the next month or so we'll finally get around to updating it and making it ultrasnazzy. Features on the horizon include a HUGE archive of CD reviews (good and hilariously bad), a buttload of pix that our generous staff photographers have never stopped shooting, an amazing gallery of drawings and suggestions that our fans turned in on the PopCanon PopQuiz (TM), better and more current sound files, the Illustrated FishBee Island online, with drawings by our pal Dan, Pain's resident artistgenius: in general, we're preparing a bunch of really cool stuff that most of you subscribed to this newsletter would find interesting. And it's all free if you log in from work.
And speaking of Rant & Rave subscribers: as of today, we have 226--yeehaw! Thanks to all of you for listening.
Btb, we've found a cache of about 30 CD sleeves for our debut 'The Kingdom of Idiot Rock' in a box, so if your sleeve has become damaged o'er the year, and you don't wish to simply buy ANOTHER tKoIR from us, send us an e and we'll get you a new sleeve. Because, you know, 1999 is all about The Love...
Speaking of love, we're rocking left, right & center this month--seriously. In addition to this weekend's shows:
MORE UPCOMING SHOWS
FRIDAY 15 JANUARY -- THE OTHERSIDE LOUNGE, ATLANTA GA
with our pals, chykrockers The Stimulants!
SATURDAY 16 JANUARY -- THE SIDEBAR, GAINESVILLE FL
3 physically cold but musically hot sets.
SATURDAY 23 JANUARY -- SLUGGO'S, PENSACOLA FL
Our favorite place to play in the panhandle.
TUESDAY 26 JANUARY -- BAJA TORTILLA GRILL, UF CAMPUS
With our new pals The Pawn Rook Four. Odds are the twoband superstar
jam will be an Elvis Costello song.
FRIDAY 29 JANUARY -- BARNSTORMER PIZZA, MONTEVALLO AL
Our favorite place to play in Alabama, with our travelling companions,
Gainesville's own The Chairs!
SATURDAY 30 JANUARY -- THE CHUKKER, TUSCALOOSA AL
Home of our dear friends, the incomparable Pain, who better get off
their 8 asses and come to the show!
Well, there's always much more to say, but I should probably stop now.
A final note: believe it or not, our first CD is still being reviewed.
Check out one of the latest from The Fritz, an Orlando ezine, at http://www.thefritz.com/backissues/volume4/v4n4reviews.html#p
and read the review that ends 'all fifteen songs on this cd
are pretty spectacular, making this the best darn mango iced tea i’ve
ever had.'
Or check out http://www.atnzone.com for the great review
that calls us 'Feel good sunshine turmoil sponge music, soaking
up musical influences and lyrical references like a whore in a bookstore'...
Ah, Rock--it is The Life.
Thanks for getting to the bottom of this giant message--you're one of the good ones, man. Feelin' fine in '99...

This is the PopCanon Rant & Rave v2 #2 for 13 January 1999
Since last week's R&R was rather voluminous, just a few short messages this week, and a hilarious latebreaking item from Canada.
UPCOMING SHOWS
FRIDAY 15 JANUARY
THE OTHERSIDE LOUNGE, ATLANTA GA
Join PopCanon and our pals Georgia chykrockers the Stimulants as we
rock Atlanta's premier lesbian bar! We'll be joining forces on a
favorite Buzzcocks song--'Ever fallen in love (with someone you shouldn't
have fallen in love with)?' Stimulants play first around 11pm, then
PopCanon will close with a couple sets. Then we'll race home for:
SATURDAY 16 JANUARY
THE SIDEBAR (COURTHOUSE DELI), GAINESVILLE FL
Yes, it's our regular show at the old SideBar. Join us, won't
you? We've been working on several new songs, and if our past idiocy
is any indication, we just might play them at this show--before they're
quite ready. As always, you are free to request any song on our setlist.
REVIEWS
I hold here in my hands two reviews of our first CD sent to me by our
dear pal Slobodan Vujonovic, who runs internationally
acclaimed rebel radio station B92 in Serbia. He graciously placed
'PopCanon Covers It Up' on his '1998 Hitlist', for which
we are grateful. But!--he sent us these two reviews of 'The Kingdom
of Idiot Rock', but of course, they're in SERBIAN!
We can't read them at all! (Although I can make out some positive
[?] comparisons to the Muppet Show, the Who's Tommy,
XTC, Talking Heads and the Kevin Kline film 'In & Out'...)
Seriously, if anyone can translate these reviews for us,
we'll give you something cool to show our appreciation.
Finally, hot off the presses: literally as I was typing this sentence, Mr. Hornbuckle e'd PC HQ with a scathing new review from the zine 'Caustic Truths' from Toronto, Canada by Mr. Keith Carmen. Here, let me share it with you in all its glory:
>Anyone who thanks Satan on their sleeve has gotta be cool, right? RIGHT?
> Exceptions to the rule are getting to be too frequent.
>This band should either be entertaining children, or have a shitty
>comedy show on public television. Whichever would make them
die first.
>Pop music that tries way to (sic) hard to be wacky and out there,
so
>that it just comes off lame and pointless. Pat Boone's metal
album
>had more balls than this. !!
Alright, then--I can't think of anything to say after that, so good night for now, and see some of you this weekend.
Ned 'I own Pat Boone's metal album, and like it' Davis

This is the PopCanon Rant & Rave v2 #3 for 20 January 1999 : Damn! Another R&R?
I know, I know--it's a lot. I just never expected we'd be playing every single weekend...i'll try to keep it short. Or funny. Or both.
Just a quick note to remind the folks in the Panhandle that PC will
be playing at Sluggo's in Pensacola this Saturday night. Once again:
UPCOMING SHOWS
SATURDAY 23 JANUARY
SLUGGO'S, PENSACOLA FL
Our perpetual pal Squeaky Steve Bottom will be joining us yet again
on this show, since our own Rob & Don are recording with the Chairs
this weekend. Look for some joint PC/Chairs shows very soon.
TUESDAY 26 JANUARY
BAJA TORTILLA GRILL, UF CAMPUS, GAINESVILLE FL
An earlyish show with our new pals the Pawn Rook Four. As is
our new tradition (thanks, Stimmies!), we will be conducting an allstar
jam with the other band--this time I think we'll indulge my Elvis Costello
obsession.
FRIDAY 29 JANUARY
BARNSTORMER PIZZA, MONTEVALLO AL
It's those joint PC/Chairs shows I just mentioned! Come see both
bands rock the tiny house and eat delicious pizza well into the night.
SATURDAY 30 JANUARY
THE CHUKKER, TUSCALOOSA AL
PC & the Chairs again, and also, we have a very special surprise
for the members of Pain, whose hometown this is. You won't want to
miss THIS!
Finally, this great news:
Members of the crack PC Investigative Unit have uncovered the location
of our alltime favorite DJ and raconteur--Jerry 'Dog Boy' Gerrard from
our late, lamented 97X! He's working in a public radio station in
Lexington, KY. Check out his picture here-- http://www.wrvg-fm.org/home.html
and send him a message of love.
There, that wasn't so bad, was it? But all the same, best start preparing yourself for NEXT week's reminder...

This is the PopCanon Rant & Rave v2 #4 for 26 January 1999 : Last R&R this month--I swear!
Damn! Three MORE shows this week, starting with a FREE SHOW TONIGHT!!
THE BAJA TORTILLA GRILL, UF CAMPUS, GAINESVILLE FL
(under the Constans Theatre in the Reitz Union)
PopCanon and the PawnRook4 will rock a small part of UF tonight!
The PC/PR4 allstar jam will be Elvis Costello's 'Radio Radio' and will
come at the end of the PR4's set which starts at 9pm. PopCanon plays
at *10pm*.
THIS FRIDAY 29 JANUARY
BARNSTORMER PIZZA, MONTEVALLO AL
(Montevallo is just south of Birmingham. Take I-65 to Calera
and then take 25 West. Barnstormer is at 980 N. Main Street--205/665.1166)
PopCanon and the Chairs will be playing all night and eating delicious
pizza. mmmm, delicious pizza...
THIS SATURDAY 30 JANUARY
THE CHUKKER, TUSCALOOSA AL
(Tuscaloosa is SW of Birmingham on I20/I59. The Chukker is at
2121 6th Street--205/391.0708)
Once again PopCanon and the Chairs will rock the house. I expect
some wackiness with T'loosa's hometown heroes Pain
will ensue at some point...be prepared.
RANTS:
Well, we hardly needed to read much past the first line of the letter
we got last night from Austin TX's famed South By SouthWest Festival: 'Dear
Artist or Artist Representative...' Yep, we were negged by SXSW.
Also, I think we've been
rejected from the Nashville Extravaganza Festival next month as well,
though they haven't even bothered to send a letter.
If anyone reading this is thinking of putting on
a festival, i understand we're an excellent live act. Give us a call.
RAVES:
Thanks again to our boy Squeaky Steve 'Brisco County' Bottom for working
the skins last week and last month. You are The Rock.
And since I mentioned the DogBoy last week, don't forget our other 97X
pal Jackson Heart:
Jackson's heart will go on SATURDAYS from 10am to 1pm on WRKG REAL
ROCK 104.9 -- To get in heart to heart contact: caveman@atlantic.net
Finally, there's talk a-brewin' twixt the PopCanon and Slack Season camps to pal up on a Gville zine...stay tuned for THAT. Also, it's about time we sent out a printed PC Newsletter...and as you read this i'm working on--i'm not making this up--a PC Illustrated Fishbee Island calendar! Its beauty is beyond compare, and its drawings are beyond belief: boygenius Dan of Pain did them, and they will make you weep with joy.
After this exhausting month--8 shows in 23 days! over $40 in profit!--we'll be taking things a bit easier next month, but the PC MailBot666 is always here, 24/7/365 to take your calls and answer your queries.

This is the PopCanon Rant & Rave v2 #5 for 18 February 1999 : Alyson Takes Charge!
Yes! It's me, Alyson! Finally I have taken over the internet airwaves to send you my Ranty and just a little Ravy version of the PopCanon Rant and Rave.
Disclaimer: this may not be as 'funny' as Ned's but it sure is as cute!

As always, you can stay up to date with the heavy PopCanon schedule on the web at http://popcanon.com/performance.shtml.
NEWSLETTER NEWS!
Hey! Many of you should find in your mailboxes today or tomorrow
an oldfashioned, made-out-of-paper PopCanon Newsletter, just like in the
old days! It's huge--four pages, but it's got pictures and other
fun stuff! Our mailing list is kind of large, so i don't think we'll
be sending many of these out, but those of you who get it, please enjoy
it and let us know what you think.
MOST of our communications will continue to come through this so-called
'E'mail--it's fast, cheap and out of control. Please let us know
if someone you know would like to sign up, and send it to
RECORDING RAVE:
Just last night we mixed an old fan favorite: Things About Which.
This is the third time we've recorded it, and we finally got it
right! Sometime in the near future, Gville radio station Rock104
will be putting out a local bands compilation CD, and this is our
contribution. Please, please, when it comes out, call Rock104
and request our song, so people will think we're actually a viable
Rock Band and not some crazy NoisePop AvantPunk IdiotRock band that
we actually are...
MERCH RAVE:
Now available at PopCanon shows in your area (or by mail PopCanon,
POB 14872, Gainesville, FL 32604, or through the internet:
http://popcanon.com/ or through the phone, 352-375-1324 - we don't
care how you do it, just, ya know, do it!):
You've seen the PunkRock Loser tighty whitys--you've seen the infamous PunkRock Loser boxers--now the girls can be a part of the action too with PunkRockLoser Girlie Panties (available in bikini and thong only). Also {new!} babydoll tshirts! All lovingly screenprinted with various PopCanon logos.
PC/Fishbee Island 1999 calendar - Featuring amazing cartoon drawings of the lyrics done by Pain's lead singer, Dan! Do you know when Jacques Derrida's birthday is? Do you care? Well this little item will fill your head with little goodies you could care less about -- just ask Ned.
And of course: CDs, t-shirts, stickers all that stuff OTHER bands have!
***A special shout out to Chad Kellogg for including us in last week's Rock 104 GAMA hour, the only local music show on Gainesville radio (what's up with that?). Last Sunday, Chad ironically played, as he put it, 'Valentine's Day', as well as Fishbee Island & Ice On The Sidewalk. Thanks Chad, I'm sure our Deli performance Saturday will be packed thanks to the publicity.
That's from me, hope to see you all soon,
alyson 'all that' spice!

This is the PopCanon Rant & Rave v2 #6 for 25 February 1999 : PopCanon Rant & Rave(boom boom boom)
Ah, the treat...not only do I get to send another Rant and Rave, but now it is even from my own email address, who woulda thunk it?
UPCOMING SHOWS
SATURDAY 27 FEBRUARY
DOWNTOWN COMMUNITY PLAZA, GAINESVILLE -- *NOON*!!
One more chance to see PopCanon this month in Gainesville
We are playing at the Downtown Plaza this Saturday around noon.
We will be part of the celebration for the completion of the NCFAN - AIDS
Walk that morning. If you want to participate in the AIDS Walk, call
372-4370 and they'll give you more information - or leave your name and
number on the PopCanon information line (375-1324) and I will give you
a call!
RAVES:
Thanks to all of you who came out to the shows last weekend.
We made a lot of new friends, had some 'interesting' experiences,
and in the end...ALL got sick. Yes, David managed to infect our bordello
with his sickness and by Saturday night, had blessed us all with high fevers,
heavy coughs, and low energy (an apology to those of you at the Deli show
for the lack of usual PopCanon banter and jokes--we're playing the Deli
again on 8 April, and since it's Free Beer Night, I promise
everyone will have more fun!).
And don't forget to check out next month's shows on-line at:
http://popcanon.com/performance.shtml. If we
haven't been to your town lately - slap us in the face - we deserve it.
Or better yet, help us out by calling your local club and saying, "hey,
you know that wacky and crazy band PopCanon? Why don't you get them
to play here, me and my friends and their friends and their friends will
all be here - darling, it'll be a smash!"
Two more good reviews rolled in over the weekend: one from a beautiful
website dedicated to James Joyce that talks about the PC song 'Bloomsday'
and compares us to:
>Phish covering They Might be Giants; X collide with XTC; The Mighty
>Mighty Bosstones in a bar brawl with Camper Van Beethoven...
http://www.rpg.net/quail/libyrinth/joyce/music/pop_canon.html
also, one from Express Magazine in Auburn AL promoting last week's show
had this to say about us:
>'...this collective has no trouble treading territory most similar
to
>Frank Zappa at an orgy, snorting Clorox in the bathroom with Fishbone,
>Primus and Phish...PC revels in catchy, quirky gems and I feel certain
>that if the Dukes of Hazzard was an indie pop band, it would sound
>not unlike this band...PC evoke the spirit of unwritten musicals,
>escapism without pretension and most importantly, the feeling that
>they really have a great time doing what they do.'
Why are we so popular in Alabama?
RANTS:
What do I have to rant about? the band is playing all the time - we
are having more and more fun doing it as the years roll on. For those
of you counting, the band is over 3yrs old. I've never even been
in a relationship that long! Things are going great, and we hope
they are for you too. If you have a rant or a rave to share, please
email us back, we love to hear from the friends, family, fans and the occasional
prisoner of the PCfans list!

This is the PopCanon Rant & Rave v2 #7 for 17 March 1999 : Brush Your Teeth!
Hey--it's me Ned Davis again. Alyson is sick with the dreaded 'Gainesville Crud' that we all picked up last month, so I've reasserted my position as R&R Neditor. All hail me!
Anyroad, we've got some more great shows this week, including
TONIGHT!! ST. PATRICK'S DAY!
THE COVERED DISH, Gainesville FL--
PopCanon and Shane McGowan's Teeth!
Join PC as we open the show AND perform as members of the Pogues cover
band Shane McGowan's Teeth. Our special
guests, drawn from the constellation of Gainesville music legends,
include Rich Haggard on Shane-esque vocals, Mike Rotolante on accordian/organ,
John McGuigan on mandolin and leather jacket, Angie Gould on mandolin/harmonica,
and our old pal Fred Buhl on whistles/violin. It really will be a
lot of fun, and the music's great.
THURSDAY 18 MARCH
THE NEW BROOKLYN TAVERN, Columbia SC
122 State Street (803) 791.4413
with Come On Thunderchild
Hello South Carolina! Our first trip there.
FRIDAY 19 MARCH
THE CELLAR BEER GARDEN, Birmingham AL
in Little Five Points
with Dave's old pals Partial To Mabel
Come and see us play a bunch of those old PC country songs that we
rarely do anymore...at the club mentioned in the song 'Ice On The Sidewalk'!
SATURDAY 20 MARCH
THE VARSITY MUSIC HALL, Tuscaloosa AL
1307 University Blvd. (205) 752.3707
We're opening for our pals PAIN, who are just coming off a big tour
of the West Coast. This is their big once-a-semester show in their
hometown, and sources predict something of a blowout. You'll pay
for the whole seat but you'll only use the edge--don't miss it!
If for some inexplicable reason you DO miss this show, we will be playing with Pain twice in the next two weeks in Atlanta and in Gainesville--more on that next week. Plus our triumphant return to Bernie's Corner in Montgomery AL...
RAVES
Not much else going on in PC-world of late--we've all just been busting
our collective ass to bring this Shane McGowan's Teeth thing together,
but I must say we did a damn fine job (remember Jesus Christ Superstar?),
and our collaborators have been topnotch: thanks to all of you.
Oh, there is one other very cool thing--we've gotten a distribution deal for our two CDs 'The Kingdom of Idiot Rock' and 'PopCanon Covers It Up': if you cannot find them in your local record store, please have them call and order from Redeye Distribution at 336-578-7300. Thanks! If enough of you reading this buy our CDs from RedEye, it will trick them into thinking we're a REAL rock band with, you know, fans and stuff, and they might, um, buy us some carrot cake or something...
As always, thanks for listening, and for Zeus' sake, see the movie RUSHMORE before we meet again, won't you?
Ned, who just turned 33--how did THAT happen?
**********
This is the PopCanon Rant & Rave v2 #8 for 24 March 1999 : Rocking Through The Pain!
You know, there's good pain and there's bad pain. The GOOD kind is like the band we're playing with twice in the next two weeks: Tuscaloosa's incomparable PAIN, eight pieces of pure milk chocolate joy to set your feet aflutter and your mind atwitchin'...have i mentioned yet in this sentence how much we love them?
UPCOMING SHOWS:
THIS FRIDAY 26 MARCH
THE 513 CLUB, Atlanta GA
513 Edgewood Ave 404.223.5132
with PAIN and Johnny Socko.
Preliminary reports are that BallSac--the guy who lights his ballsac
on fire for your amusement--is going to be there. So should you be.
Watch us carve out a slice of the Punk Rawk.
NEXT FRIDAY, 2 APRIL
DOWNTOWN PLAZA, Gainesville FL
A free show! The Usuals play at 8pm, PopCanon plays at 9pm and
Pain closes out at 10pm. Bring the family.
More great shows below...
RANTS:
Then there's the bad kind of pain, like the kind we felt
driving our van--properly known as 'the Bordello' but more recently
known as 'the li'l DeathTrap'--when it suddenly blew a tire as we drove
80 mph down I-95 in South Carolina. Our drummer Robby saved us all
AND won the coveted Weekend's MVP award for masterfully guiding the van
off the road with nary a bump. Long story short: more than TWO hours
later we were off to the New Brookland Tavern, arriving just in time to
see a band finishing up in our timeslot.
Yes, we missed the gig, but incredibly, we still got paid by
the wonderful club manager Trey. But the trip wasn't in vain, really:
we DID get to spend more than an hour talking to Officer Chad Williams
(not his real name) of the South Carolina State Troopers, who finished
off his night shift by hanging out with us and regaling us with delightful
stories of Life On The Edge. Oh, we laughed with fear and cried with
joy as Officer Williams told us tales of some of the world's dumbest criminals
AND about his prowess as a lover. I'm really not kidding about that
last part--if any of you are in South Carolina and mention his name to
any woman he's ever been with, he promises they'll do two things: 'turn
beet-ass red' and 'their jaw will drop open'...thanks, Officer! And
keep that giant nightstick to yourself!
Also, a hint to any women who get caught speeding on the
way to the beach by Our Pal Chad and think maybe you can get out of a ticket
by taking your tops off: Chad videotapes all encounters, and if you're
unlucky, plays them back on his little cop monitor in his spare time...you've
been warned.
So now our RockVan has *4* new tires and actually drives pretty well. And we're more in debt than ever before. Don't forget: we're still taking applications for Sugar Parent...all you need is $5000 and very little sense.
RAVES:
Thanks to our pals in Partial To Mabel who got us a lastminute
gig in Birmingham last week. There's a reason why we don't usually
perform songs like 'Play That Funky Music White Boy', but thanks anyway.
And of course, thanks to Pain for having us open up at
their wild hometown show--seriously, those people need help. I think
we scared some of those kids, i really do...they certainly scared me
with their cigarillos and jumping on broken glass, i tell you whut.
Special merch mention: we still have those unbelievable FishBee Island
calendars illustrated by Pain's singer Dan Lord for sale, and they are
filled to the brim with various arcane holidays, obscure birthdays and
blasphemous remarks.
Also, believe it or not, there's ANOTHER guy on earth named
David Hornbuckle, who now lives in Atlanta. About a year ago our
David Hornbuckle and he hooked up and decided to make a split cassette,
and by gum, they've done it. Check it out: it's horn-006 at http://hornbuckle.org/records/
and it is a mere *$3*! As the other DH says: 'i think that fans of
any kind of music will enjoy at least parts of this tape. so that means
you will like it all.'
UPCOMING SHOWS:
SATURDAY 3 APRIL
BERNIE'S CORNER, Montgomery AL
Our triumphant return to Bernie's--word on the street is there will
be a special Lesbian Lockdown at this show. We don't
know exactly what that means, but it sounds very 'rock'...
THURSDAY 8 APRIL
SIDEBAR/COURTHOUSE DELI, Gainesville FL
Free beer night. Drink yourself stupid and scream a lot.
SATURDAY 24 APRIL
THE COVERED DISH, Gainesville FL
with old pals Big Fish Ensemble and new pals Belloluna, both from Atlanta.
We're going to recap 'Herod's Song' from JCS--
you'll want to see that, I'm sure.
That's enough for now, don't you think? Other gigs are always posted at http://popcanon.com/performance.shtml
Thanks for being you.

This is the PopCanon Rant & Rave v2 #9 for 1 April 1999 : Stormin' Performin' PopCanon
And luckily for all of you, Alyson (that's me) has taken over again - I've finally gotten rid of that nasty Gainesville Crud and I'm ready to take on the world...
We're very proud to announce that we've just been tapped by Sony International to record an entire tribute album to the Backstreet Boys, except we have to sing all their songs in German AND change them all to 7/4 time!! Isn't that the coolest thing?!
OK, it's April Fool's Day. But that *could* have happened...
UPCOMING SHOWS
We are playing with our pals PAIN (http://www.indieweb.com/pain/) again
this Friday IN TOWN! Come see what we've
been raving about:
THIS FRIDAY 2 APRIL
DOWNTOWN COMMUNITY PLAZA, Gainesville FL
FREE SHOW!! Come early and don't miss anything!
8pm the Usuals
9pm PopCanon
10pm Pain
(If you're coming from up north, take I-75 south and take the 2nd

town and stay on it until you pass Main Street downtown. The
Community Plaza is there on your right.)
*For more information about Pain, see the bottom of this message.
SATURDAY 3 APRIL
BERNIE'S CORNER, Montgomery AL
4501 Troy Highway 334.284.9234
Our triumphant return for the the big Lesbian Lockdown! (whatever that
means: I don't care, I'm lookin forward to it
- as my grandmother would say, 'What county are they from?')
THURSDAY 8 APRIL
SIDEBAR/COURTHOUSE DELI, Gainesville FL
Free beer night. Drink yourself stupid and scream a lot.
Opening up is the bizarrely talented James Lantz.
FRIDAY 9 APRIL
Hornbuckle Solo at the Common Grounds, Gainesville FL.
SATURDAY 10 APRIL
SFCC/SPRING ARTS FESTIVAL, Gainesville FL.
We're playing on the Garden Stage at the Thomas Center at *3 pm*...
we were scheduled for the Main Stage but we were
told--seriously--that we might give an old lady a heart attack if we
did. So we moved to the Garden Stage, so that we might
scare children instead.
RANTS:
Last week we once again followed PAIN to a show in Atlanta - let me
just say, I didn't realize it was still punk rock to be a
jerk! Throughout the show we were welcomed by kids yelling "YOU
SUCK - GET OFF THE STAGE - YOU'RE NOT
PUNK ROCK" And then other kids screaming to the jerks, 'Shut
up, they're cool!' Back and forth - it was all very odd to us - but
hey, we're up to it, we had a good time, got to hang with PAIN and Kenny
Howes (new rocker friend in Atlanta - we'll
be playing w/his band in May: stay tuned) AND had GREAT pizza at Savage's.
So thanks to the kids who were cool, and to

This is the PopCanon Rant & Rave v2 #10 for 7 April 1999 : Spring ArtRock is in the air!
GAINESVILLE, FL - home of PopCanon and a lot of other CRAZY people!
Alyson sez:
We are trying something different in this Rant and Rave by sending
you a fancy email from ALL of PopCanon, instead of just
me or just Ned (who by the way, my grandmother says she just can't
understand!)
(Ned: Ah, how trenchant the Fresh Prince was...)
(Don: Well, I don't understand Alyson's grandmother, but that's because...oh,
never mind.)
(Dave asks: Is this so everyone can experience the crazy way we discuss
things here in the Kingdom of Idiot Rock?)
Anyway, pay attention and read on!
RAVES:
(Don: I am the FIRESTARTAH!! Ned: Get it? He's RAVING...)
PopCanon is playing twice in town this week:
*First, TOMORROW NIGHT, THURSDAY 8 April
*@ the Courthouse Deli/Sidebar, Gainesville FL
*w/ opening act - the insane songcraft of JAMES LANTZ
plus it's free beer night, so come on out and yell at us 'Dude!
you rock! that one song, about that guy who does that thing?
It rocks! Oh, and play Brown Eyed Girl!'
*Then, THIS SATURDAY 10 April
*@ the Spring Arts Festival, Gainesville FL
**3pm* on the Garden Stage - Thomas Center
Fun for the whole family. Really.
And we're playing a couple of shows next week that both offer us something we desperately need: FREE STUDIO TIME! They're both contests, so if you want to ever hear our new songs recorded, come out and cheer for us and we might win free studio time at Mirror Image!
UPCOMING SHOWS:
FRIDAY 16 APRIL
SFCC Battle of the Bands
SantaFe Community College Theater
We'll go on early in the evening, but of course we'll email you next
week with another Rant and Rave with more details.
(Don: Come out and watch us lose to 'I believe I can fly...')
SATURDAY 17 APRIL
MusicwoRx & Rock 99.5 (High Springs FL) present the 1st Annual
UNPLUGGED EXPO @ the Baird Center, 619 S. Main St., Gainesville FL
noon-6pm. Dozens of groups and individuals will be playing at
this music expo on Saturday afternoon. For information call
(904) 454 7655 or email musicwoRx1@aol.com
RANTS:
(Don: Rookout, Raggy! Rants!)
Unlike last week, this week went really well! Everyone is finally
over that darn Gainesville Crud (well, except Ned, who still can't hit
those Prince-esque high notes--note to self: stop licking stage floor as
part of act). This weekend we played with our
pals PAIN and the USUALS, and even partied with them afterward.
They're great people and it was a lot of fun. For all our
rocking together, we rarely get to hang out after a show and just kick
back, tell road stories, eat, play dumb songs together and dance till dawn,
so this weekend was great!
Re: Playing out of town--As always, having a place
to stay during our jaunts out of town is a big problem - there are SIX of
us. And we can't always be as lucky as we were in Atlanta to
have Anne (Ned's SO) who just happened to be staying at the most fancy
hotel in the City (we rode the glass elevators up and down 50 stories all
night long - just like the dorks that we
are!)... On Saturday we traveled to Montgomery AL, and stayed with the
owner of the club: Bernie of Bernie's Corner.
Thanks a lot, man--even if the lesbian lockdown was more of a lesbian
LETdown: in fact, i don't know if we saw ONE lesbian
that night (well, except for Donny, who wore his cow teddy)... Now,
Bernie's house didn't have glass elevators but it did have a
huge screen TV, a heated pool that we didn't even swim in, and lots
of cars to look at. So if in the next couple of weeks we
happen to be in your town - please help us find a place to stay!
And if you are a girl, Donny will be even happier!
(Don: We can trade outfits!)
Love to you all,
PopCanon
And remember: PopCanon practice random acts...

This is the PopCanon Rant & Rave v2 #11 for 14 April 1999 : Kickin' It Home School
Hi there, we're PopCanon (again!), coming at ya groupstyle...
During this last year, we haven't played so much at home--we've been spreading The Rock around the Southeast by touring nearly every weekend. But, man, are we making up for it this month! In our own patented idiotic style, we are playing THREE shows in Gainesville in the next two weeks. But ALL these shows will be highly irregular and different - so there are no excuses to miss any of them! Where? When? Check out THIS WEEK'S SHOWS:
THIS FRIDAY 16 APRIL
SFCC BATTLE OF THE BANDS
SantaFe Community College Gymnasium, Gainesville FL
The competition lasts from 7pm-midnight. We play around *9.15pm*!
(Then Dave plays at the High Note in downtown Gville from 10-2.
Come hear his unique versions of PopCanon songs as well as originals
the band refuses to play...)
THIS SATURDAY 17 APRIL
UNPLUGGED FESTIVAL & MUSIC EXPO
The Baird Center, 619 S. Main St., Gainesville FL
Sponsored by musicwoRx, Rock 99.5 and Mirror Image
Noon-6pm. We play around *2.30 pm*! And (sort of) unplugged!
For information call (904) 454 7655 or email musicwoRx1@aol.com
BOTH of these shows will feature several Gainesville bands and musicians, all of them vying for the same Grand Prize: FREE recording time at Mirror Image Studios! We badly need to win to finish recording D'Art, our new CD--please come out to these shows if you can and scream for us so the judges will think we're popular and deserving...
RANTS:
None, really--we had a great week. We played at the Spring Arts
Fest downtown last Saturday and met some wonderful new fans! Bought
some crazy art rings from a girl named Allison and danced with 3yr-olds
on the lawn of the Thomas Center - who can beat that?
RAVES:
Well, we've finally got some great news about our website! Finally
with this small break in our relentless touring schedule, we've been able
to get a few terrific new features online. Please check out:
**Our HUMONGOUS Reviews section online! It's got GOOD reviews, hilariously BAD reviews, TESTIMONIALS and COMPARISONS to other bands, and ARTICLES. Literally minutes of edutainment can be yours at http://popcanon.com/reviews/
**Our PopCanon PopQuiz is up, with links to the many brilliant and hilarious suggestions and drawings submitted by our deranged fans is at http://popcanon.com/Q/questionnaire.html.
**These very Rant & Raves are collected in the R&Rchive.
Come share the magic at http://popcanon.com/RnR/R&Rchive99.html
MORE UPCOMING SHOWS

This is the PopCanon Rant & Rave v2 #12 for 21 April 1999 : Dishin' it up...
A briefish one this week: please contain your applause until the end. However, this will be the last R&R for several weeks, we promise!
UPCOMING SHOWS
THIS THURSDAY 22 APRIL
BARNSTORMER PIZZA, Montevallo AL
PopCanon performs their commissioned composition 'Ballyhoo' for the
University of Montevallo's Philosophy Club Debate & Concert.
This year's theme: Faith vs. Reason (don: we have little of
either.)
THIS SATURDAY 24 APRIL (two shows for your enjoyment)
-afternoon, UNPLUGGED FESTIVAL & MUSIC EXPO
The Baird Center, 619 S. Main St., Gainesville FL
sponsored by musicwoRx, Rock 99.5 and Mirror Image
Noon-6pm. We play around *2.30 pm*! And (sort of) unplugged!
Come out and support us and the other local musicians,
including On Cloud Nine and Steve & Hairy from Squeaky, but hoot and
holler for us the loudest so's we can win us some free studio time!
(don: In the event of a tie, winner will be decided by bathing-suit competition.)
Seriously, one of the judging criteria is crowd response, so don't make
us resort to the tired routine of tying don to the traintracks to try and
build up some fake audience sympathy...
-evening, COVERED DISH
210 SW 2nd Ave, Gainesville Fl
with Amanda Garrigues and Big Fish Ensemble
Kyle, the saw man, will be guest starring with us on saw
(duh!), hand farts, mouth harp and safety bottle caps - this will be his
last show in town (don: He's going to play the 1812 overture on the
entire state of Colorado.) PLUS Big Fish Ensemble & PopCanon
will revise 'Herod's Song' from our soldout performance of Jesus X Superstar,
Donny and Alyson will bring in da noise and da funk with their Bari Saxophone
and Tuba, so be there, or be lost...
Also that night, our friends at the Civic Media Center will have a booth
set up on behalf of Black political prisoner and radio journalist Mumia
Abu-Jamal, who has been imprisoned on Pennsylvania's death row since 1982.
Call the CMC at 373.0010 for more info.
RAVES:
Last weekend, we performed at the SFCC Battle of the Bands and WON!!!
2nd Runner-up, that is...(don: actually it was a tie, but we won the
swimsuit competition) Thanks for coming out and showing your support.
Thanks to Sabine for the giant tuner we won--hey, why don't you sponsor
US, Sabine?!--but you know, PopCanon doesn't need a rackmount tuner: we
tune to magnetic north...
Once again, please take some time and check out our new website features ... i'd love to know what you think about the giant reviews archive and Ned's What's New! column, plus we could REALLY use everyone's help on the Gainesville Band Family Tree.
Happy Charles Mingus' Birthday to y'all--Hope to see you at the shows!
We'll be taking a few weeks off from playing, so you shouldn't see another one of these messages until the middle of next month, when we kick off a 4day Rockathon featuring a show in Atlanta GA, two shows in Alabama, and two shows in Pensacola with our old pals PAIN! Free tshirt and Honorary Tour Manager status will be bestowed upon anyone who comes to every single show, plus...um, we'll write a song about you or something.
Thanks for listening.

This is the PopCanon Rant & Rave v2 #13 for 12 May 1999 : Surprise Show This Friday
Haven't talked to you all in a while; we took the last two weeks off - to do what, you ask? Well...
Alyson - um, I painted my hallway... :(
Michael - I worked on our van, The Bordello
Don - um, I painted the town red... :^O=8
Rob - [Rob is in Orlando and cannot answer this question--though plainly
his answer would be: I was in Orlando]
David - I was vacationing in sunny California. Hey! Let's all
move there!
Ned - I took a VERY long bath...
Oh, and we also WON the Unplugged Musicworx Competition (by plugging in! Bully for us!) so now we're going into the Mirror Image Studios at the end of the month to RECORD!! Woo-hoo!!
So now we're back on our feet and ready to RUMMMMBBLE!
Check us out THIS FRIDAY, 14 MAY at the COMMON GROUNDS COFFEEHOUSE
in Gainesville FL with two other great and crazy bands, both from State
College, Pennsylvania:
Idiot Savant Garde
(a math-rock trio) and Holy
Mary, Mother of Bert (weird-ass alternafolk).
Both bands share members and are touring together, so we're going to have a swell old time this Friday night. PopCanon will play last, around midnight, but don't miss these other bands that are--in some very real and freaky ways--like parallel universe versions of us...
And listen to PopCanon on GAMA's Radio Rendezvous this Sunday night
at 10 pm. Someday--someday--Rock 104's Gainesville Bands Compilation
will come out, and our song 'Things About Which' will be on it...

remix of Merimble, an acoustic version of The Reason (dig that violin!), and
old fav Tin Can, which we left off the original CD because Blue didn't like it
or something, but he's gone now so what the hey! Any *current* owners of The

Have you read Ned's 'What's New?' column - make sure you keep him on his toes by asking him your favorite philosophical question of the week and he will surely answer it ad nauseum in this new journalistic endeavor of his.
What else is new? Well we finally made it into the infamous Mirror Image Studios to take advantage of the free recording time we won two months ago at Unplugged Fest (thanks MusicWorx and Mirror Image!) We recorded nine new songs in 5.5 hours - whew! Although we've been saying it for the last year or so, we promise that the new full length album will be out this fall. It will feature the horn section singing their heart out as they take over the mic featuring a new rap style created by a little known wonder Christina 'Hey there everybody my name is Christina' Bello. $50 - SPECIAL THANKS on the CD, please indicate how you would like your name printed - Free CD when available.

This is the PopCanon Rant & Rave v2 #17 for 23 June 1999 : Shwinging into the weekend...
Welcome to the PopCanon fans' Rant and Rave for the weekend of June 25th!
RAVES: We are going back to the panhandle (get a job, hippy!) this weekend to bring the zany groove to your backyard! Our upcoming shows this weekend are:
Friday, 25 June at JavaPit, 210 Miracle Strip Parkway,
Ft. Walton Beach FL

Saturday, 26 June at Sluggo's, 130 S. Palafox,
Pensacola FL
850-435-0543
Both with our friends the Chairs.
Next week we travel to the other coast:
Friday, 2 July at Roses, South Miami Beach FL
Saturday, 3 July at Respectable Street, West Palm Beach, FL
Both with Noah's Red Tattoo.
Last week we traveled to the depths of Alabama and visited Montgomery and to what is considered by some to be Gainesville's arch enemy, Auburn, AL. We visited the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts. Saw incredible works, hung out and played in the interactive kids' section and were promptly told to leave when the guard spotted Michael in his Ben Folds Five t-shirt that read "kiss my ass". Little did the guard realize that David was wearing a Hello Satan shirt - but I guess the characterization of Hello Kitty fooled him because David got left alone. Ah the perils of being in a rock band! We then headed over to Auburn where we spent the afternoon walking around the town checking out every local music store Although we may have spent an entire afternoon milling around, we only bought $2 worth of picks! [Actually, i also bought a Zildjian splash cymbal. -mjm] A big shout out to Bernie and Kim at Bernie's Corner and Noah at Java.com for the great hospitality and food.
RANTS:
While being interviewed by the Auburn school paper (The Plainsman), it came to
our attention that PopCanon as a group fails to purport any sort of political
view or agenda. (don-that's because we can't agree on ANYTHING) We thought we
would remedy this right now and explain to you, our fans and associates
(because we realize not all of you consider yourselves fans of PopCanon, but
nonetheless are on this list...) exactly what the premise of PopCanon is.
While quite short, we hope you enjoy this new level of understanding us:
When the fall of man became apparent in 1980, we decided it was imperative to speak out. We as individuals fail to see the significance of a one man army fighting the fight of disgrace. Thus, we act collaboratively with each other and our peers in an attempt to fulfill the voids left by the space age. In order to do so, we as PopCanon and not as individuals create text in which others can find context and reference as individuals and not as a society. It is very important to understand the dialectic of relationship, especially as found in American ideology purporting individualism and group theory. Each song created by the group PopCanon is a montage of sounds created by the individuals (Alyson, Dave, Don, Michael, Ned and Robby) but with the influence of an entire culture surrounding them. By communicating as a collective to the individual fan through context and reference, we are able to create a unified approach in the fight of disgrace. The individual is important in order to relate to references only understood as a society. This dichotomy in effect creates a unique and individual sound that we spread to hordes of kids at rock shows.
(don- that, and the MAN sucks rocks!)
(Michael- Hope that clears things up a bit for you...)
Love to all,
PopCanon

RAVES (a bit ranty)
We've been in the studio again this past week
doing overdubs, hoping to finish up our new album D'Art by the end of summer
for a mid-fall release. It's been fun so far, thanks to Mike Rotolante
(the godless voice of reason), and his pal Rusty Valentine, who heard a
track-in-progress last night and remarked, "This is as awesome as insane
gets!" The normal antics have applied and band personalities clashed, but
in the end, it's all about the love, baby, and man do we love...
CONTEST:
In preparation for our fall release of D'Art, we are
taking submissions of YOUR artist rendering of the infamous 'Art' sculpture
by Missy Ricardo, as seen in our press photo and to be seen on the cover of
the album. What do you win? The possibility that we MAY use your artwork within
the small confines of the CD packaging, somewhere, somehow. Of course, your
name will be listed in the Special D'art art section (not to be confused with
the Special Thanks section that costs a $50 donation - see past Rant and Raves
for more info on that!) If you have never seen 'Art' or need the image 'to work
from, mannnn', go to http://popcanon.com/ - 'Art' is the white scary thing
in the top lefthand corner.
UPCOMING SHOWS
Next week we will again head up to Alabama. Why, you ask? Because we love it
so...and it loves us, too.
FRIDAY 30 JULY
Bernie's Corner, Montgomery AL
with Squeaky
SATURDAY 31 JULY
Tasty World, Athens GA
with Squeaky and Ceiling Fan
Man! We haven't played with Squeaky since...well, since last Friday when we blew the roof off the Covered Dish during the London Calling tribute. Come join us next week in badgering them to reprise 'Clampdown'.
One last thing: we finally got around to putting up a page at mp3.com -- our song 'Valentine's Day' is up there at http://www.mp3.com/artists/28/popcanon.html and very soon we'll have many more on our page to compete with the 368 songs Rob McGregor's got up there right now...(just kidding, Rob -- last Friday's Grain set was also great)
That's all folks: Love, Kisses, As always,
PopCanon

This is the PopCanon Rant & Rave v2 #20 for 30 July 1999 : OH NO, NO SHOWS!
Here is your very own, unique, individualized, embossed in 14k gold, handmade, special delivery, RANT & RAVE for the next few weeks...
STOP right there! Don't go out this weekend...cause we won't be there! Well, in Montgomery and Athens that is. Yes that's right, both shows this weekend have been cancelled. Sorry for the inconvenience, but the forces beyond our control (oh man!) screwed everything up. So...
We are going to be taking the next few weeks off to finish our third album, rest, CELEBRATE ALYSON'S BIRTHDAY (Alyson - I'm always accepting presents, birthday or not, send love notes and gifts to PO BOX 14872, Gainesville, FL 32604), to love, to hate, to travel, to work our regular jobs, to hate some more, to play video games, to read, to love again, to write new songs, to mow our lawns, to see OTHER bands, to drink, to party, to see old friends, to...
But then we will be out rocking again:
Friday, 20 August at Lil Ireland's, Auburn AL with Couch
Saturday, 21 August at the 1048, Montgomery AL
Monday, 23 August at Durty Nelly's, Gainesville FL with AllStar 69
Saturday, 28 August at Jackrabbit's, Jacksonville FL --We're scheduled to play
at 9:30pm, so don't be late!
RAVES (a little ranty):
Last weekend PopCanon traveled to Alabama, our home away from home. After picking
up SIX cases of the most wonderful ginger ale ever, Buffalo Rock, we headed
to Visionland for a free amusement ride excursion. Little did we know that Visionland
is a XIAN theme park - Ned writes about it in this week's What's
New! column, and it's all good.
That's all for now. Again sorry for the late notice of cancellations. Believe us, if we COULD be rocking we WOULD be rocking.
Love and kisses,
PopCanon

MONDAY 23 AUGUST
DURTY NELLY'S, GAINESVILLE FL
with AllStar 69
Join us in our return to Alabama, won't you? I bet my roadie Mr. Chorus Pedal will be at the Auburn show... also, how can you NOT come out on Monday and see Gainesville's finest glampunk band AllStar 69? They've got smoke bombs and a light show, for crissake! (For Peter Criss sake!)
RAVES:
We're pleased to announce that we've been spending our downtime productively:
we've pretty much finished recording our new album (D'Art), and we've got so
much good stuff that we've also devised a plan to release a companion album
(Nothing et.al.) at the same time (early October)--more details soon!
Still, even in our absence from the scene for a little while we were not forgotten. Last week's Detours magazine published the results of its Local Music Poll, and guess what? PopCanon has been voted BEST FUNK BAND! No joke--not Best Rock Band or Best Pop Band or Best Robot Band or even Best Ska Band [ed.: we are NOT a ska band!]--we were voted Best Funk Band! Good gravy, are we THAT mysterious a group that people think we're a FUNK BAND?!
Anyroad, speaking of Local Music Awards, the 2nd Annual Hammies are taking nominations. Sponsored by Moon Magazine, go to: http://www.moonmag.com/hammies/ and vote for us in whatever category you wish. And if you're feeling particularly visionary, don't forget to choose PopCanon's D'Art as your Favorite CD Release of 1999, even though it won't be out until the fall. Trust us--you'll love it.
If you're still looking to buy our debut CD (The Kingdom of Idiot Rock) and you love using your credit card on the web, go to http://cdbaby.com/popcanon and purchase it there. Say hello to Derek for us.

________________________________________________
As we've been saying, we plan to release our third CD, entitled D'Art, this Fall (like next month) BUT WE NEEDYOUR HELP!! If you'd REALLY like to help us get the record out, you could join our small but crucial group of sponsors (Mutant Bob Forsman, John from Michigan, and Sue & Leo so far) who are helping us raise the money (app. $2000 is needed) to duplicate and print D'Art, the Official Album of the New Millennium. We have several categories for assistance, though NO amount is too small or too large.
$50 - SPECIAL THANKS on the CD; please indicate how you would like your name printed; free CD when available.
$100 - SPECIAL SPECIAL THANKS on the CD, with name in individual and unique font to make you stand out above the rest (just in case no one knew how unique you really are); free CD when available.
$500 - EXTRA SPECIAL YOU'RE COOL THANKS on the CD AND PopCanon will come to your house and perform lewd and lascivious acts on you or your house mates; please indicate how you would like your name spelled on Donny's naked chest; free CD when available.
$1000 - PopCanon will NOT come to your house and perform lewd and lascivious acts on you or your house mates; please indicate if you would like to be named as Executive Producer or Sugar Teat; free CD when available.
We plan to release D'Art in the non-annoying-jewel-case package - the digipak. We believe this packaging will reflect the environmentally concerned hippie music contained within and ward off major label execs from thinking we are only in it for the money - "its all about the message man!"

RAVES:
Thanks to all of you who have graciously donated your time and money to support
our upcoming album D'Art. While we haven't quite made it to the $2000 mark,
we're coming along and are still acccepting donations. In fact, for a donation
of $1000 we'll write a song about how awesome you are and put it as a secret
bonus track! And for those of you skeptical that we will actually release this
thing after a year in the studio, BEWARE - the album is in final mixes as we
speak and CD release dates have already been confirmed. D'art will hit the streets
December 3rd, but more on that as the date gets closer...
Also, we are pleased to announce our presence on the Libyrinth website at http://www.libyrinth.com/archives.html -- this beautiful site features pages dedicated to James Joyce, Jorge Luis Borges (happy birthday!), Thomas Pynchon, Umberto Eco, Gabriel Garcia Marquez and Franz Kafka. The Great Quail (webmaster extraordinaire) has listed us on several of these pages with extensive tales about the band, the songs and why we do what we do that makes you love us so. Please do us all a favor and check it out.

This is the PopCanon Rant & Rave v2 #24 for 23 July 1999 : NO S. Carolina show this weekend!
Hello, rockers.
PopCanon IS playing tonight at the SideBar (Courthouse Deli) and we hope to see some of you there. But our show this Saturday at the New Brookland Tavern in South Carolina is CANCELLED!! Apparently the recent hurricanes have scrambled some calendars, and the club didn't bother to let us know this until today. We're very, very sorry, for we dearly wanted to go and play there -- we even learned two amazing John Zorn songs for the occasion. Oh, well, live & learn: there's no education in that second kick from a mule, as my mama always used to say (or was it Pose?).
Anyway, here's SOME good news. If you'd like to preview some of our upcoming songs for D'art (The Album of the Millenium), go here to our mp3.com page. We've got a few up, and they're pretty good. Let us know what you think: the PC MailBot666 is always online, awaiting your missives.
Again, our humblest apologies.

This is the PopCanon Rant & Rave v2 #25 for 5 October 1999 : Thrice I tell you!
Hey, we're playing three times this week--thrice i tell you!
THURSDAY 7 OCTOBER
Rock 104 (WRUF) Presents
PopCanon, Szechwan Pork and the Pawn Rook 4 at The Blowhole (Purple Porpoise)
Gainesville FL - 10pm
It'll be a fight to the finish--we play last.
FRIDAY 8 OCTOBER
Tom Miller Presents An Evening with PopCanon
at the Common Grounds Coffeehouse, Gainesville FL - 10pm
Much hijinkery with Tom and us, as could be expected.
MONDAY 11 OCTOBER
Um...Shane McGowan Presents Another evening with PopCanon
at Durty Nelly's Irish Pub, Gainesville FL - 10pm
I'm sure we'll bust out some great Pogues covers.
So why are we playing so much in our own hometown? Is it because we love it so much? ehh, probably not. These are three very different shows to three very different crowds, we suspect. We plan to play our BayFest set at the Blowhole, since NO ONE SAW IT IN MOBILE! Check out the story here ... then we'll do a whole bunch of crazy nonsense and totally unrehearsed requests at the Common Grounds, because that's what we do there, and Tom Miller IS some kind of shaman ... and then at Nelly's we'll be playing a fine local establishment and we'll get to bust a few great Irish tunes to the regular Monday night crowd ... now SURELY you could make ONE of these shows, couldn't you?
The new albums are wrapping up -- hear some samples at MP3.com and be amazed.
Also, this is your last chance to sponsor us and get your name on the album--we're sending it to the printer next week for an anticipated release in about 7 weeks. We won't be playing very much till then in preparation, but it'll be worth the wait i wager. Thanks so far to Bob Forsman, John from MI, Sue Carrel & Leo Gorenstein, Jay & Naomi, Shellian and Fred 'Viking Mead' Buhl ... you are the wind beneath our wangs.
Loving the Rock, Believing in the Rock and Appreciating the Rock: These are

This is the PopCanon Rant & Rave v2 #26 for 29 October 1999 : Scary Show Tomorrow Afternoon!
Well, it's not really going to be THAT scary, but Saturday 30 October at *2pm SHARP* PopCanon will be competing in a spook-tacular Battle of the Bands sponsored by Ernie Ball and Sims' Music. It will be held in the Sims parking lot at 4908 NW 34th Street in Gainesville, and the Ernie Ball Gear Bus (a licensed Dungeon on Wheels!) will be there, along with free (and terrifying!) refreshments.
Please come out at *2pm SHARP!* and help us vanquish (yes, vanquish) other competitors Telefonic (2.45pm), Nice Guy Eddie (3.30pm) and 28 Gates (4.15pm). The Celebrity Judges (Ex-Heartbreaker Stan Lynch, UF Music Professor Jim Sein, and swell-guy DJ Jackson Heart) are always swayed by a band turning out a large and appreciative crowd. (Did i mention the free refreshments?) Also, we'd appreciate a crowd since our Celebrity Judge Voodoo Dolls have been acting up lately...
Upcoming November Shows:
12 - Bernie's Corner, Montgomery AL (with Fez!)
13 - Barnstormer Pizza, Montevallo AL (with Like A CreamDream!)
19 - Sluggo's, Pensacola FL (with the Metros)
20 - The JavaPit, Ft. Walton Beach FL
See you tomorrow -- if you dare!!!!

*RAVES*
Our new album, D'art, is FINISHED! Finally! And it's really good--we're very
happy, though we're having problems letting it go, since we've been working
on it on & off since June of *last year*... We've nattered on about it quite
a bit, so we're not going to say anything else about it except: why don't you
PRE-ORDER your copy now?! $10 will get it mailed to you anywhere in these United
States: send that check TODAY to PopCanon, POB 14872, Gainesville FL 32604.
Please remember to include your complete mailing address, and a phone #/eddress
in case there's a problem.
Of course, in about a month it will start showing up in stores, at all our shows and at our various web outlets (like CDBaby), but if you want to be the first one on your block to own it, we'd like to help you.
Another good thing: PopCanon has joined the ranks of Garageband.com, which
was started by ex-Talking Head Jerry Harrison and some music industry bigwigs.
Their shtick is to reward recording contracts to bands that are most popular
on their site. So far we've submitted only Things About Which, but if you'd
like to vote for us, click here
and you'll go straight to the 'Things About Which' profile page at garageband.com,
and if, after checking out our stuff, you decide to register - mentioning PopCanon
as the group who referred you - and then review at least two randomly selected
songs, we'll get one step closer to winning the prize. Plus you can add to these
already published reviews:
'Sounds like Chicago (the band, not the city).'
'Loved the inclusion of brass into the music. Melody not defined well. Good
vocals. Good arranging. Good rhythm. Fun song. DISSONANCE AT THE END I COULD
DO WITHOUT.' (emphasis mine, and I could NOT do without the dissonance at the
end!)
Here's how Ink19 described us in a recent live music review:
'Quirk-rock auteurs with a skewed sense of humor that can only come from grizzled
grad students.'
Finally, there's an amusing article about Mike Watt that has snarky comments
from Michael & Ned in it here.
*RANTS*
Well, not only did we NOT win the Ernie Ball Battle of the Bands last week,
we lost so totally we lost TWICE! The young-white-male funk-hop of Telefonic
and 28 Gates both tied for First Place (and a chance to go on and win $25,000).
Nice Guy Eddie took Second Place for their crisp set of modern pop, and we took
Third AND Last Place. Now I know we can't win everything ALL the time, but DAMN
I don't ever expect to take LAST PLACE! We were vanquished; we were smited;
and I promise we will NOT learn any lesson from this...
UPCOMING SHOWS
19 November @ Sluggo's, Pensacola FL
20 November @ the JavaPit, Ft. Walton Beach
And in December, two CD release parties featuring games, prizes and a tribute
to the songs of PopCanon by Gainesville's finest noisicians!
Remember, it's always Tenacious D time!

Sorry, the two PopCanon shows scheduled for this weekend at Sluggo's in Pensacola and the JavaPit in Ft. Walton Beach have been cancelled due to family illness. We are very sorry to not be able to rock. We will reschedule soon, and we promise it will be even better, faster, stronger than before... bionic, even.

This is the PopCanon Rant & Rave v2 #29 for 02 December 1999 : CD Release Parties are go!!
THIS IS IT! The CD Release Party Madness has begun! Although we still don't hold the finished D'art CDs in our hands as of noon Thursday (36 hrs. before the official release time), we're assured that the rickety cargo plane carrying our digipaks, snazzy color booklets and CDs in en route as we speak...now, what's the minute that comes *after* The Last Minute?
FRIDAY 3 DECEMBER
Common Grounds Coffeehouse *10pm* $4
919 W. Univ. Ave, Gainesville 352.372.7320
Come kick off our first of two parties with us and our all-star guests from
the Gainesville Rockerati:
Chad King of Cowboys & Indians will open the night, followed by several
of Gville's finest paying tribute to the PopCanon Back Catalogue (Scheduled
to appear as of presstime: members of Squeaky,
AllStar 69,
Charlie McWhorter, Spike the Cat,
Frog, The Chris Weingarten Basement Funk AllStars, and a few other surprises).
Then we'll play all of D'art and pass out in relief and exhaustion.
SATURDAY 4 DECEMBER
Borders Books & Music *4-6pm* FREE
6837 Newberry Rd, Gainesville 352.331.2722
PC will play two sets of literate music at this, the Grand Opening of Gville's
Borders. A reading list will be provided. Gerry 'the DogBoy' Gerrard will host.
FRIDAY 10 DECEMBER
The Covered Dish *10pm* $5
210 SW 2nd Ave, Gainesville 352-377-3334
Another star-studded CD Release Party.
Opening acts are Gville's Brittle Stars and Athens' Elf Power. Enjoy the pristine
sound and luscious smoke-free environs of the Dish, and buy a second copy of
our CD for a gift...
If all goes according to plan, we should have a total of *4* CDs available
tomorrow:
*D'art, our masterwork and Official CD of the New Millennium (i *know* the millennium
doesn't start until 2001);
*Pricksongs & Descants, a 19song CD 'for fans only', a collection of old,
goofy songs and several crazy new things;
*PopCanon Covers It Up, our 1998 7song EP of us covering our favorite Florida
bands; and
*The Kingdom of Idiot Rock v.2.0, a remastered version of our rocking 1997 debut,
with three bonus tracks.
I hardly need to remind anyone that these are the finest gifts one could buy in this holiday season, but i just did, didn't I? All CDs are $10 (except Covers It Up, which is but $5)--however, at either of our two CD Release Parties, D'art & Pricksongs will both be a mere $8 apiece, or an even merer $15 for the pair. Plus we'll have all new & beautiful tshirts, a new calendar and a bunch of other insane stuff for which we are reknowned.
Must dash now, so much more to do before tomorrow night!

This is the PopCanon Rant & Rave v2 #30 for 09 December 1999 : YES! YES! YES! (etc.)
YES! YES! YES! YES! (etc.) The CDs are here! They look beautiful and sound terrific! We are very tired and very happy, and we still haven't even had our 'official' CD Release Party yet. That one will be:
THIS FRIDAY, 10 DECEMBER!
The Covered Dish *10pm* $5
210 SW 2nd Ave, Gainesville 352.377.3334
Opening acts are Gville's Brittle Stars and Athens' Elf Power.
Enjoy the pristine sound and luscious smoke-free environs of the Dish, and buy
a second copy of our CD for a gift... Expect some Party-type zaniness (including
a potential river of bubblewrap on the pit floor for popping, and some cake
for eating but NOT throwing at the band!). This will, of course, be our last
show at the Dish this year, and we expect it to rock all sorts of monkey ass.
We will be playing our ENTIRE new CD, D'art, and probably a few other surprises.
Five words: banjo-ukelele and electric sitar. Don't miss it.
And a huge, huge THANKS to all the participants in last week's Tribute to the PopCanon Back Catalog at the Common Grounds: good gravy, what we thought would be merely an amusing lark was instead a brilliant bunch of moving, hilarious and rocking performances. More details can be found here.
Some other treats: Pricksongs & Descants, our 19-song companion record to D'art, is available now too. Both are $10, though at Friday's show they will each be a mere $8, and if you get them together, they are an even merer $15!! We also have some kickass D'art tshirts, and the brand new PopCanon calendar Y2K is ready, and features more brilliant drawings from Pain's Dan Lord, this time illustrating our new song CaliMariAchi. I daresay you could complete your entire holiday shopping list with a stop by the old PopCanon Merchandise Table this Friday...and bring singles!
CONTEST:
VOTE FOR PopCanon at CDBaby. CDBaby is where we sell our CD online, it's a great
site run by the very clever and friendly Derek Sivers, and they're holding a
big contest for Best Independent CD of the Year. (As fellow CDBaby-er Amanda
G sez:)
*You must vote for PopCanon's 'The Kingdom of Idiot Rock' as the BEST INDEPENDENT
CD OF THE YEAR (even though that year would really be 1997--oops!)
*You don't have to give any personal info
*It literally takes 10 seconds
All you have to do is follow this link,
search for 'PopCanon' and click. Once you've found it, VOTE.
And then next month when we get D'art up at CDBaby, people will be so impressed by our victory for Kingdom that they'll pick up D'art. Well, that's the plan, at least.
UPCOMING SHOW:
Friday 17 December
Club More, Clearwater FL
opening for Big Sky
How did that happen? Maybe we'll get on the Memorex karaoke box next!
OK, then, we'll see you all on Friday night. Thanks for rocking with us.

This is the PopCanon Rant & Rave v2 #31 for 15 December 1999 : I heart Poca Lyps!
This is the last R&R of the 1900s...spooky, isn't it? This may be the last R&R EVER, if all the bad predictions come true!
We have but one more show before the apocalypse comes and the Internet collapses and all your car radio presets get scrambled:
THIS FRIDAY, 17 DECEMBER 1999
CLUB MORE, CLEARWATER FL
703 Franklin Street 727.466.MORE
Opening early for Big Sky *9.30pm*
(We believe this club lets in people under 18, but you should call Club More
and confirm if you're one of our legion of younger fans.)
RANT (against US!)
It seems we're always forgetting someone ... this time the PopCanon Sucks! award
goes to Fred Buhl and Michelle Diamond, whom we forgot to thank during last
week's LoveFest concerning our various CD Release Parties. Michelle played clarinet
with us on a song, and Fred is one of the beneficent D'art sponsors--thanks
to you both.
RAVES
Btb, last Friday's show with Brittle Stars and Elf Power was quite lovely--the
bubble-wrapped floor was cleverer than expected, and Ms. Kristen Wanner performed
a mighty feat of sound engineering. Thanks to all who attended and supported
us, and we trust you enjoyed hearing the banjolele and electric sitar...
Also, apparently the link we gave out last week to vote for us as CDBaby's Best
Independent CD was problematic: if you were unable (or unwilling!) to vote for
us last week, please just go there now
and find the button to VOTE. It will still only take 10 seconds, we swear. Thanks.
Now, let's spend a little time pushing the new CDs. Observe the artwork from

Both these CDs are $10 and D'art will be available online at CDBaby later this month, and through RedEye Distribution early next year. Pricksongs & Descants will only be available from us at shows, so why don't you come out and see us sometime? We've also got some lovely new merchandise (including a new calendar once again drawn by Pain's genius Dan Lord), and lovely new D'art shirts.
Whew! It's been quite a century, hasn't it? Try and have some good holiday fun,
ok? We'll talk more soon, but right now we've got to go and fortify our Y2K
bunker. Remember that in a month, when we're all reduced to cannibalism, that
the world will still need smartass selfreferential irreligious artrock bands--probably
moreso than ever--so don't eat us!
We heart Poca Lyps,
