Here is but a small sampling of some of the comment cards people concerned about the takeover of 97X by WKTK and Entercom Corporation have turned in as of 23 March 1998...

'97X is the only station worth listening to in the Gainesville area. A vibrant music and art culture needs support, and 97X provides some of that support.  The community will support 97X in return.  No drastic changes!'

'I'm 97X's greatest fan and bitterest critic.  Here are my demands:
1) More good stuff (local bands, eclectica, latest releases)
2) A little less country & novelties
3) A lot less dumb stuff (sports babe, basketball)
I has spoken.
Lenny'

'If I hear one more M. Carey or Celine Dion song, I may spontaneously explode -- and I'm not joking.  And i live only a few blocks from your station.'

'97X fills that huge void where original music has a chance to thrive and be heard.  It allows old, fresh music to be heard and be appreciated without a corporate influence hanging over its head.  THERE'S MORE TO LIFE THAN MONEY!'

'To whom it may concern --
97X is the only station I've ever heard where you can hear county, jazz, blues, folk, pop, rap, alternative and local music all within the same hour.  I think it's especially cool that you can turn on the radio any time of the day and hear G'ville's best local bands.  Our "college radio station" (103.7) is a classic rock station.  97X is the Gainesville's only true college radio station.  It's all we've got.  Please, please, please don't change a thing (including the awesome DJ's).
Matt Hicks, class of 98'

'The current format is really great.  I know I speak for a lot of people who aren't writing postcards or letters but really appreciate 97X.
Caroline Magary'

'Dear Sir,
Not only is country music in a rut, but a very serious and smelly one at that.  There is already one (1) such station delivering this drivel over the airwaves.  I know that you know this is only about money, namely money in your pockets.  How much do you really need?  Dressdowns aside, you already have one (1) gem of a station program going on--why ruin it?
Love & Hugs, Rich Haggard (whoreculture)'

'I like Dog Boy and 97X's format.  I spend money.
Thank you, Don Undeen'

'97X is the rason that Gainesville's local musicians have become in the national spotlight.  Myself being in a local band (Squeaky) I am very grateful for the radio play we have gotten.  No other station in town will play us, so it's important to keep the station the way it is.
Steven Bottom from Squeaky'

'You NEED to keep playing local bands.  That's the way they get heard.  If they're not heard, no new music.  Music dies out, no expression.  Fascist groups take over, then it would be like that George Orwell book 1984, and that would suck!
Jeff'

'97X seems to be the only station in Gainesville that is not run by tonedeaf morons.  The format at 97X needs to stay the same for the sake of the local music scene and for the sake of its dedicated listeners.
Justin LeBlanc'

'SAVE THE X!  STOP THE MADNESS!  LOCAL MUSIC RULES!  DOG BOY THE MAN!'

'Don't destroy radio in Gainesville.  Support music worth listening to.  Support local and independent music.  Keep the DogBoy and the rest of the 97X crew.
Ambivalently yours, Bill Stephenson'

'Mr. Granger,
If the format of the station is changed, I'm gone.  Leaving this town.  Not one more mundane station that plays the same flabby music.  I'll get my PhD elsewhere.
Christopher Yermal'

'WHAT'S SO FUNNY ABOUT PEACE, LOVE & UNDERSTANDING?  ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!
97X = GOOD!
E. Costello'

Finally, here are the lyrics to the rewritten PopCanon Fight Song, in honor of 97X:

97X Fight Song
Hey 97 X
Please keep your current format
Ed, Jackson and Dog Boy
We love you 97 X!

Man, we hate the Babe--
Isn't there any way you can make her go away?
She is just the worst, and
She puts me to sleep!

Ed's an idiot--
Jackson's a nice guy, freak flag waving high
Hey, let's not forget
Moe 'Mo Music' Moe!

And it's such a joy
To listen to Dog Boy--
Jerry plays the songs that you
Always want to listen to
Everything that's old and new
Even plays PopCanon, too ... thanks, Jerry!
